Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

EPQ

What is an EPQ?

The AQA Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is an exciting program designed for students seeking to deepen their knowledge and skills beyond the traditional curriculum. This unique qualification allows students to explore a topic of their choice with a focus on project management and research, culminating in a comprehensive project that can take the form of a research report of 5,000 words, a production, or artefact.

Past project titles include:

  • Is technology making us more depressed?
  • What effect does the assessment and exam structure in UK schools have on students’ mental health?
  • How can companies become more eco-friendly?
  • Is racism being taken seriously in sport?
  • How have innovations in  technology increased safety in Formula One?
  • Is ‘fast fashion’ morally wrong?
  • A comparison of two earthquakes in different decades; how has technology impacted response?

The EPQ will take 120 hours to complete, with 30 being delivered as Taught Skills sessions.  The remaining 90 are given to the completion of the planned project.  The course begins in the September of Year 12 and should be completed by the October of Year 13:

So why is the EPQ worth doing?

The EPQ fosters independent learning, critical thinking, and project management skills. Students embark on a journey of self-directed study, where they plan, research, and execute their project with guidance from a supervisor. This process not only enhances academic skills but also cultivates valuable soft skills such as time management, problem-solving, and effective communication.

It can also significantly strengthen a university or apprenticeship application, demonstrating to admissions tutors a student's dedication, initiative, and ability to pursue interests beyond the standard curriculum. The EPQ also earns UCAS points, contributing to university entry requirements. Additionally, it provides a platform for students to delve into subjects they are passionate about, which can inspire future career paths and academic pursuits.

The EPQ is more than just an academic qualification; it's an opportunity for students to distinguish themselves, explore their passions, and prepare for the challenges of higher education and beyond.
